  • WHAT KIND OF SAFETY FEATURES DO THE MINI COOPER, MINI COOPER S AND MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS MODELS HAVE?

Additionally, each MINI has a highly sophisticated and comprehensive airbag system. Hardtop and Clubman models have 6 total front and side airbags: 2 front, 2 side-impacts in each front seat, and 2 ceiling mounted side curtains. Countryman and Paceman models come armed and ready with 7 total front and side airbags: 2 front, 2 side-impacts in each front seat, 2 ceiling mounted side curtains and 1 additional knee airbag on the passenger side. Coupe, Convertible and Roadster models have 4 airbags: 2 in the front and 2 side thorax airbags in the seats so they move with the passenger. HAVE THERE BEEN ANY CRASH TESTS DONE ON A MINI?

In recent testing, the 2011, 2012 and 2013 MINI Cooper Countryman has earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) designation as a “Top Safety Pick” for achieving “Good” ratings for front, side, rollover, and rear impact protection.

IIHS also tightened the criteria to include “Good” performance for roof strength in rollover crashes. The roof of the Countryman withstood a force equal to nearly 5 times the car’s weight. By comparison, the current federal standard is 1.5 times weight.

In addition to “Good” crash test ratings, winners must have electronic stability control (ESC), an important crash-avoidance feature, which is standard on all MINI models.

Please visit each model's individual page to see more safety features on MINIUSA.COM for a full list and more details.

HAS THE MINI BEEN TESTED IN EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS?

The MINI has been tested in the harshest conditions. We picked the MOST extreme places to do our testing. For cold weather testing we went to the Arctic Circle in Finland, during the winter. For hot testing we drove the car aggressively and repeatedly through Death Valley (USA).

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MINI COOPER AND MINI COOPER S?

Two things. The first is its size. (We don’t call it “The Big MINI” for nothing.) As the first four-door member of the MINI family, the Countryman has a rear bench to seat five passengers comfortably and boasts 16.5 feet of cubic goodness in the boot (42.2 cu. feet with the rear seats folded down). That's a lot of kayaks. Or TVs. Or ottomans.

The second difference is that the Countryman is one of two MINI models to come with an optional ALL4 all-wheel drive system, arming adventure-minded motorers with the means to conquer challenging terrain. The Paceman is the other ALL4 model.

WHY DO YOU HAVE THE MINI ONE IN EUROPE AND NOT AMERICA?

We talked to a lot of people and it seemed that there was very little US demand for the 90 HP MINI ONE. The US is a very horsepower-conscious country, and few people voiced interest in a 90 HP car. In the US, even inexpensive small cars, such as the Hyundai Accent, Toyota Echo, Daewoo Lanos, and Kia Rio have more than 90 HP. The MINI One simply would not offer competitive performance. The price difference between the MINI Cooper and MINI One is only about US $2,000, and the MINI One has much fewer standard features and horsepower. The MINI One is popular in Europe, where fuel prices are three to four times higher, and commuting speeds are slower. Even minor fuel mileage savings makes the difference in that setting.

  • HOW MUCH BIGGER IS THE MINI THAN THE CLASSIC MINI?

The MINI Cooper is about one foot wider and two feet longer (12'1.6") than the Austin and Morris Mini. The same width as the Cooper, the Clubman offers a bit more cargo space with its 12'11" length.

I'M A PRETTY BIG GUY (OR GAL). WILL I FIT IN A MINI COOPER OR MINI COOPER S?

With its wheels spread out to the corners as far as possible and our plant on roof, MINIs have a surprising amount of cabin space and headroom. In general, a MINI Cooper or MINI Cooper S can comfortably accommodate people as tall as 6' 7". For more information about who and what can fit in a particular MINI model: head to the SURPRISING SIZE section on that model's page.

DO THE REAR SEATS FOLD DOWN?

They sure do. And they are a 50/50 split, so you can put one or both down at a time. The rear seats in the MINI Countryman are a 60/40 split These models come standard with three fold-down independent rear seats. With the use of a pull strap, passengers can release the backrest on each seat for a desired comfort level or fold them down completely to load more precious cargo.

CAN I GET A MINI WITH A SKI OR BIKE RACK?

You sure can. In fact you can configure a MINI with a ski rack, a bike rack, a surfboard rack, a snowboard rack, a luggage rack, a roof box and so much more within the "Build Your Own" section of MINIUSA.COM. Contact your preferred dealer to inquire about ordering a rack to outfit your car.

  • HOW BIG IS THE FUEL TANK?

Topping off the petrol tank for the Cooper and Cooper S would require 50 liters, which is about 13.2 US gallons. Topping off the tank for the MINI Countryman or Paceman requires 47 liters, which is about 12.4 US gallons.

  • HOW ARE MINI ACCESSORIES PRICED?

Any price listed on this website is Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. Actual prices may vary and depend upon your MINI Dealer. Prices do not include installation or painting, if required. Prices exclude taxes and/or shipping and handling charges. Check with your authorized MINI Dealer for complete accuracy of information and availability.

WHERE CAN I GET ALL THOSE GREAT MINI TOYS AND GIFTS?

You can find these items by visiting your preferred MINI Dealer's website and checking out the MINI Lifestyle section. You can find your local dealer's website by using the Dealer Locator, which can be found under the SHOPPING TOOLS section of this site.

  • WHERE ARE MINIS BUILT?

MINI’s manufacturing home is in Oxford, England, on the same site where cars have been produced for over 100 years. In addition to Plant Oxford, some MINI vehicles are assembled at the VDL NedCar plant in the city of Born in the Netherlands, and at the Magna Steyr facility in Graz, Austria.

HOW CAN I IMPORT A MINI TO THE UNITED STATES?

We love your enthusiasm about MINI, but at this time you cannot import a new MINI into the US. There are multiple issues involving specifications for various countries that make this too difficult.

WILL THERE BE EUROPEAN DELIVERY OF THE MINI?

We're working on it. We know you want European delivery, so we're trying to make it happen, but we can't make any promises as to when the program will be in place.

WHAT'S THE PRODUCTION MIX OF MINI COOPERS TO MINI COOPER S MODELS?

Currently, we are building about 50 percent MINI Coopers and 50 percent MINI Cooper S's.

  • WHAT'S THE STORY?

In 1956, amid fuel shortages in a number of countries including the UK due to the crisis in the Gulf of Suez (look it up!), there was a pressing need to design a fuel-efficient car. Lord Nuffield of British Motor Corporation (BMC) charged his chief designer, Sir Alec Issigonis to create an "orderly saloon" that could still compete with the onslaught of fuel-efficient microcars on the market. The first Classic Mini made its debut on August 26, 1959. The Classic Mini was the first mass-produced automobile with a transversally placed engine. It fit 4 adults, was gas-frugal, had great handling, and was priced under $800! The placement of the engine created a commodious passenger area and allowed a proportionately large wheelbase: the Classic Mini became the first sedan to truly handle like a sports car.

Later, Queen Elizabeth II was seen behind the wheel of a Classic Mini and sales began to take off. After a series of celebrities bought Classic Minis, the car became a "must-have" auto, and over the decades it has become the most popular British car ever made with over 5.3 million units sold. The Classic MINI influenced the design of Mary Quant's mini-skirt and in a poll organized by Autocar Magazine in 1995, Classic Mini was named their Car of the Century. In 1996, a panel of experts from Classic and Sportscar magazine voted the Classic Mini to be the “No. 1 Classic Car of All Time,” and in 1999, an international panel of judges voted the Classic Mini to be the European Car of the Century, taking second place in the Global Car of the Century Competition, topped only by the Ford Model T.

    WHERE WAS THE MINI DEVELOPED?

They were developed in the UK by the BMW Group's Development Division.

WHY ARE THEY CALLED THE MINI COOPER AND MINI COOPER S?

In 1961, legendary British race driver John Cooper re-tooled the Classic Mini to create a higher performance, racing version. He gave it a more powerful engine, higher and closer gear ratios, better brakes, wider tires and a color-contrasting roof to stand out in the crowd. Thus, the Mini Cooper was born. A few years later in 1963, Cooper boosted his version of the Classic Mini even more, creating the purest racing car, the Mini Cooper S.

As time went on, the Mini Cooper became a racing phenomenon, winning three times at Monte Carlo (1964, 1965 and 1967) and taking home first place in numerous other races on the international rally circuit.

WERE MINIS EVER SOLD IN THE US MARKET?

Between 1960 and 1967 about 10,000 Classic Minis were sold in the US. The stay was brief, but the Classic Minis left their mark with dozens of Classic Mini Owner's Clubs still thriving in the US to this day.

WHY DID MINI LEAVE THE US?

In 1968, the US Government issued new Safety and Emissions Regulations that, at the time, MINI was not prepared to implement. So you could say we lost our green card.

WHEN DID THE NEW MINI COOPER S MAKE ITS GLOBAL DEBUT?

At the Tokyo Auto Show in October 2001.

WHEN DID THE NEW MINI COOPER MAKE ITS US DEBUT?

At the Paris Auto Show in October 2000. It first became available in the US March 22, 2002.

WHY DO YOU GUYS SOMETIMES USE MINI IN ALL CAPS, AND OTHER TIMES “Mini” WITH ONLY THE FIRST LETTER CAPITALIZED?

We use “Classic Mini” when we're referring specifically to the older, classic version of the car, and “MINI” when referring to the brand-spanking new models or when referring to MINI as the brand.

    ARE MINIS RACED?

We're extremely excited about bringing MINIs back into racing. We have already received classification from most of the major amateur and race sanctioning bodies in the U.S., and we expect to continue our heritage of success in competitions. Of course, we also strongly encourage amateur racers to get out there and have as much fun getting involved with rallies, races and autocrossing as possible.

And because last year ended on such a high note, the new MINI WRC, which will contest the FIA World Rally Championship from 2011, will receive its world premiere in Paris. This year, the MINI Countryman, the model for which the MINI WRC is based upon, is a big inspiration for this rally.

WHAT KIND OF WARRANTIES DO YOU OFFER ON DEALER-INSTALLED ACCESSORIES?

When your MINI Motoring Accessories are installed by your dealer prior to delivery, the accessories will carry the full new vehicle limited warranty. So the best time to select and install your accessories is when you order your new MINI. These maintenance programs are available to the exclusive benefit of the initial purchaser, owner, or lessee of a new vehicle, sales demonstrator vehicle, Aftersales Mobility Program vehicle, or BMW Group company vehicle from an authorized MINI Dealer in the United States (including Puerto Rico).  Coverage is not transferable to subsequent purchasers, owners, or lessees.  The sole exception to the non-transferability of coverage is that household transfers – transfers within the United States (including Puerto Rico) to members of the household of the initial purchaser, owner, or lessee of a MINI vehicle from an authorized MINI Dealer – will not terminate coverage.   Household transfers are limited solely to transfers to a current or former spouse or spousal equivalent, child, sibling, parent, grandparent, or grandchild from the initial purchaser, owner, or lessee of a vehicle.  In the event of a household transfer, purchasers, owners, or lessees of a MINI vehicle should promptly advise their authorized MINI Dealer to document and confirm the household transfer for purposes of coverage. The payoff of a loan on a vehicle by the initial purchaser and the purchase of a leased vehicle by the initial lessee are not considered transfers for purposes of coverage.

WHERE SHOULD I GO TO GET MY MINI SERVICED UNDER THE COMPLIMENTARY SCHEDULED MINI MAINTENANCE PROGRAM?

To receive Complimentary Scheduled MINI Maintenance, just schedule an appointment at your authorized MINI dealer while your vehicle is covered by this program. And since all of the program’s services are done at an authorized MINI dealer, by a MINI certified technician who has been specially trained by us, we can ensure that only original MINI parts will be used. In other words, your MINI will be maintained by our standards, which are, admittedly, higher than most.

  • WHY CAN'T I SEE ALL OF MINIUSA? I USED TO BE ABLE TO.

To view it, you need to have your computer monitor set to 1024 x 768. To check (and change) your monitor setting:

-Go to your computers "Control Panel" folder. The location of this folder will vary slightly depending on which operating system you are using, but it usually can be found under "Settings" in the main "Start" menu.

-Once you open this folder, you want to open the tool that adjusts the setting on your monitor-this will be called "Display", or "Monitor", or "Appearance and Themes".

-Double-click on this file. It should open a pop-up that has several tabs along the top, one of which will be called "Settings".

-Go to this tab, and make sure that the display size is set to 1024x768. Once you make this change, you need to click on the select button.

-You will then get a message asking you to confirm that you want to apply the changes. You must select yes, or the screen will revert back to the previous (smaller) size in 15 second.

Once you make this adjustment, you should have no trouble seeing all of the site and building the MINI of your dreams.

IT SEEMS LIKE THE BUILD YOUR OWN SECTION CAN TAKE A LONG TIME TO LOAD - WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?

One of the great things about MINIs is that there are so many options for customizing your MINI to be perfect for your needs. Pepper White Convertible S with black roof and gray interior? No problem. Spice Orange MINI Cooper S with black roof, Union Jack mirror caps and Red interior. Sure (although that might not look all that great together). In fact the 2013 Models offer over 10 million different combinations. This means, of course, that there's a lot of images and information that needs to be loaded to make sure that you can build exactly the MINI you want. So if it's taking a little bit to load, have a little patience - and start thinking about how you're going to trick out your MINI.

CAN I VIEW MY PREVIOUSLY SAVED CONFIGURATIONS?

Because there are updates to every MINI model with each passing year, we are not able to "translate" all previously saved configurations into the new model. For previously built and saved configurations prior to the current model year, customers will still be able to access a text list of the details of their configuration. Customers can use this list to create and save a new configuration based on the latest model year options.

I CAN'T REGISTER ON THE WEB SITE. PLEASE HELP.

That's a situation that needs rectifying as soon as possible. Please email us with the specifics of your problem at WEBMASTER@MINIUSA.COM.

I AM A REGISTERED USER BUT CAN'T LOG IN TO EDIT MY PROFILE (PASSWORD PROBLEMS). WHAT CAN I DO?

If you've already requested a password reminder, double-check to make sure you're typing it in correctly and are still not having any luck, then please email us at WEBMASTER@MINIUSA.COM to let us know the specific error message you're getting.

CAN I USE MY MINIUSA.COM ACCOUNT USERNAME AND PASSWORD TO LOGIN TO THE MINI OWNERS' LOUNGE?

To log in the MINI Owners' Lounge, you must establish a MINI Owners' Lounge account, and you will need the Production number or VIN from the MINI that you are purchasing in order to set up this account. It's extremely important to note that this account is different from any MINIUSA.COM account you may have set up. Therefore, the username and password you use on MINIUSA.COM will not automatically work for the Owners' Lounge. If you want, you can set up your Owners' Lounge account to use the exact same username and password that you use on MINIUSA.COM. But you must do this by first actually setting up a MINI Owners' Lounge account.

I AM A REGISTERED USER AND WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE MY USERNAME AND/OR PASSWORD.

To change or update any of your MINIUSA.COM account information, visit "Update Your Profile" (under "Stay In the Loop").

WHAT CAN I DO IF THE DEALER LOCATOR ISN'T WORKING PROPERLY ON MY COMPUTER?

First of all, please let us apologize. The last thing we would ever want to do is get in the way of you trying to identify your preferred MINI Dealer. Secondly, if you are on the Flash site and know you have the most recent version of Flash installed and are still having problems, to properly answer your question, we will need to know a few details about your computer set-up. Please email our webmaster at WEBMASTER@MINIUSA.COM and let us know:

    1. What kind of computer you're using (PC/Mac)

    2. Whether you use Internet Explorer (IE), Safari, Mozilla, Chrome

    3. What version Internet browser you're using e.g. 9.0, 10.21, etc. - to find this out please look under the "help" menu for your Internet Browser
